Artist Statement
For me, the experience of being in the mountains and surrounded by nature is like ex-hailing. A relaxation only nature offers you. I try and convey this experience in my work, with every picture I have gone to great effort to capture the atmosphere. Early starts, long walks/runs, sometimes only to return home without shooting a single frame. I have huge confidence in film photography choosing to carry only a film camera for landscape work. This style of approach allows you to really immerse your self in one's surroundings and you need to understand your environment to capture it well. I just love the outstanding quality of film, choosing to shoot 95% of my work with a Fuji 617 mainly on Ektar 100 or Velvia 50. For me there is no argument, the fuji 617 digital counterpart would be a 240 mega pix digital camera. This also enables you to blow prints up to 2 meters or greater without any loss of detail.
As a fine art photographer I process, print and frame all of my own work. This allows the opportunity to have a creative input at every stage.
Currently I run a very busy digital processing lab in the town of Rangiora and I also operate F-stop.co.nz. Luckily the mountains are not far away.
